History of the Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas Sign

The Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas Sign was created in 1959 and has become one of the most recognizable landmarks in the United States.

The sign was designed by Betty Willis and built by Western Neon under contract with Clark County. It originally cost about $4,000 to construct.

Who Designed the Las Vegas Sign?

Betty Willis, a graphic designer working for Western Neon, created the famous design. She never copyrighted it, allowing the sign to become a symbol shared by the city and its visitors.

National Historic Landmark

In 2009, the Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas Sign was added to the National Register of Historic Places, recognizing its cultural and historical importance.
